Have you heard of DMT Breathwork? It is breathing style purported to release your body’s own supply of DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine), a psychedelic compound.

It is done for a few minutes and can lead to intense experiences. It is in a camp of breathwork techniques that entail breathing faster than normal and can include breath holds.

These breathing styles are intense. Sessions last for a few minutes on the low end and three hours on the high end (Holotropic Breathwork).

What about the rest of your day? Can how you breath when you’re working, exercising or sleeping help you stay calm and focused in the midst of social media, political and biological pandemics?

Time to learn about LSD Breathing

I learned about “LSD” breathing in Patrick McKeown’s Oxygen Advantage Instructor Training program.

He uses the acronym to refer to “Light, Slow, & Deep” breathing. Breathing in this way (and, ideally, through the nose) doesn’t just optimize gas exchange — it triggers a cascade of beneficial physiological changes. These include balancing the nervous system and calming the mind.

McKeown was first introduced to this breathing approach through the work of Russian Dr. Konstantin Buteyko.
